The Refolo team has been traveling these past few weeks. While away from our home base, we had to get creative with meals and finding what to eat. What to eat while plant-based and traveling is a major pain point we hear often. It can be hard to figure out what food to make if you’re not in a place where you can cook your own food. We hope these recommendations help you! Find our top tips for eating plant-based while traveling below.

1. Find the Local Grocery or Farmer’s Market

A local grocery can be a good bet for plant-based foods while you’re on the go. It’s a place where you might also find some snacks that are easy to transport. Some markets or grocery stores will also have hot bars that can be simple options for dinner!⠀

2. Try Plant Friendly Cuisines (ie. Middle Eastern Asian, or Mexican).

Mexican. Asian and middle eastern foods have a lot of plant-centered dishes. Sometimes the recipes won’t start completely plant-based you can often make accommodations. For example, I had a plate of nachos for lunch. I removed the sour cream and cheese and added extra beans and guacamole. Simple tweaks can make dishes entirely plant-based.

3. Call and Plan Ahead

If a group you’re traveling with picked a restaurant, call ahead to see what the place can make. On occasion, we ate a pre-meal at a place we knew would accommodate plant-based before a larger group meal. We use Google to find options but know some people use happy cow and a billion veg too.

4. Prep in Bulk

We don’t do this often but it’s a fine tactic to quell the hunger. Graze on packed snacks (think nuts, homemade trail mix) during the day.
